ART 250 Lecture 6: Cycladic Art, Minoan Art, Mycenaean Art
Document Summary
Aegean sea - contemporary greece to the west, contemporary turkey to the east. Cyclades - group of islands in the southern part of the aegean sea. The islands were plentiful in marble and a lot of it was in the most prestine condition (especially parous) These statues were most likely votive statues. They would"ve been painted, too but that comes off of marble easily. 2 ft long (would not stand as a statue, but be laid down on top of a grave or in a tomb) Obviously has been taken from one, single block of marble. We don"t know a lot about this culture. Named after king minos (guy who had the minotaur put in the labyrinth daedalus made for him. We have some writings from the period, but we haven"t found the rosetta stone of these peoples so we can"t read it yet.
