Health: Infant Mortality Rate and Life Expectancy Rate are calculated
Education: Primary school and literacy
HDI: A composite that looks at – a score of 0 to 100 meaning 0 is the worst and 100 is the best.
The formula for this follows as:
(GDP/capita (PPP) + Life Expectancy + Ed. Literacy & Primary School)
- This should tell us about a country’s development.
When a country has a high GDP/capita and PPP, then it usually has high life expectancy and ed.
Lit. and schools (Healthcare and education); Poor countries may invest a lot in healthcare and
education also like Cuba- high life expectancy and conduction but lo wealth overall.
Political Development
Freedom House- Gives every country a ranking of democracy; It scores based on,
1 = good to 7= bad
Things they base this ranking off of includes:
- Political Rights: Let me participate!
- Civil Liberties: Leave me alone!
This ranking tells us about political development and is good for research.
Transparency International- transparency.org
CPI- Corruption Perceptions Index- it shows how corrupt a country is
- Numbers are taken from perceptions
- Corruption: Can be still legal but may be fair/unfair
- Biggest Corruption- Tipping; getting more alcohol/ free stuff by tipping more; it is all
about the culture of the country/ state; it is very accepted in the US
Theories of Development
European Union- Challenges to State Power
From below Succession movements South Sudan, Kosovo, East Timor, etc.
From Above Going to organizations/ that give power to them such as the WTO or NAFTA.
- Regional Organizations – More emphasis in these now!
- Global Organizations – Have Fallen apart (global.org)
