Peer vs friend- have intimacy and trust with friend. Erik erikson is saying we have conflicts- highlights: stages in adolescence, identity and role confusion, intimacy vs isolation. Intimacy follows identity: you need to have an identity to share before you can have intimacy and share intimate moments with others. In adolescents- friends need intimacy, loyalty, and trust. You expect the same people will be there for you the next day. Adolescents are drawn to others who have similar attitude, values, and behavior: reciprocity of friendship. Functions of dating: recreation, status and prestige, companionship and intimacy. Identity formation- i always date this type of person . Information- need practice/experience for formal relationship of marriage. There are cultures- where dating doesn"t occur- right now children of immigrants sometimes are strict and have beliefs against dating- this is in conflict of the american way of dating where people are more relaxed.
