Language involves both the ability to comprehend spoken and written words and to produce meaningful communication when we speak or write. Speaking involves a variety of cognitive, social, and biological processes. Sign language is communication expressed by movements of the hands along with facial and bodily gestures: american sign language (asl)/ spoken by x > 500,000 people. Languages do not develop in written form: involves a complex set of processes. Language often used for the transmission of factual information. Allows us to: access existing knowledge, draw conclusions, set and accomplish goals, to understand and communication complex social relationships. Spoken languages can be conceptualized in terms of sounds, meaning, and environmental factors. Phonemes elementary units of sound that make up words. Morphemes word parts / small but meaningful sounds that alter and refine a word"s meaning.
