HIST 220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Working Class Culture, Wage Labour
Document Summary
By the 1850s, working and middle classes had appeared in new york. The working class was a result of growth in the economy and in the industries, as well as cultural factors, political ideology, and the symbiotic relationship between the classes themselves 1. According to the empire state, the working class formation varied depending on the industry as well as the location. In new york, the appearance of a working class was directly related to the reorganization of the crafts to meet the increased demand for manufactured goods 2. In other words, the working class came about when the workplace was reorganized to manufacture products in a quicker way so that the demand for the goods could be reached. Specifically, this reorganization meant that costs were cut to increase the amount of products produced. This production was done by low-paid, semiskilled or unskilled workers 3. These workers were usually women, children, and immigrants.
