Document Summary

Sexual vs asexual reproduction: asexual reproduction produces offspring via mitosis. Offspring are genetically identical clones of parents. In sexual reproduction, two parents contribute traits to their offspring. Offspring are genetically distinct from parents, and from each other. Genes are the unit of heritability passed from parent to offspring. Arrangement of genes on chromosomes: genes for a given trait are found at the same position on a chromosome, known as a locus. Most traits (hair color, eye color, etc. ) are a combination of several genes. Arrangement of chromosomes in human cells: human somatic cells have 23 pairs of homologous chromosomes. Haploid and diploid: a diploid cell has two sets of chromosomes. Written as 2n, where n is the number of chromosomes in one set. Human somatic cells are diploid, where 2n=46 chromosomes: a haploid cell has a single set of chromosomes.
