Lost sight in that eye and became self-conscious of the visible mark of scar tissue. As a result, she withdrew from the world. Blamed him for poverty that kept her from medical care. Eventually had scar tissue removed at 14, but emotional damage remained. Internationally celebrated author, poet, activist who wrote: She credits this loss of her sight to allow her to truly see the truths around her: For a long time, i thought i was ugly and disfigured. This made me shy and timid, and i often reacted to insults that were not intended i believe though, that it was from this period that i really began to see people and things . Best known for 1983 novel: the color purple. First african american woman to win pulitzer prize in fiction.
