Literal sense: the plain sense of scripture. Spiritual sense: the hidden sense of scripture. Too many problems with the literal sense. Allegorical sense: the meaning that is hidden beneath the surface. Literal: moses took the israelites out of egypt through the red sea, egyptians drowned. Allegorical: each christian is baptized and emerges a new person with all the sins destroyed. Typological sense: old testament contains types that foreshadow christ. Garden of eden (genesis) foreshadows new jerusalem (revelation) Adam born of virgin earth, jesus born of virgin mother. Temptation of adam foreshadows death/resurrection of jesus. Abraham sacrificing son isaac foreshadows jesus" death/resurrection. Troplogical sense: moral lessons drawn from text. We must imitate the faith of abraham. Anagogical sense: references to the end times. Lift our minds to the heavenly jerusalem. Definition: extended metaphor, in which objects, persons, and actions in a narrative, are equated with the meanings that lie outside the narrative itself in a one-to-one correlation.
