Definitions: there are many things that can fall under theatre, for an event to be theatre it has to fall under four conditions, live, ephemeral, collaborative, a synthesis. Live: must happen live, a live actor, a live audience, in the same space together. Collaborative: between audience (interpreters) and artists (producers) Synthesis of many arts: acting, writing, visual, philosophy, music. Aristotle said tragedy had to have 6 elements: plot, character, diction, story, melody. But why: shakespeare believed the purpose of theatre was to old a mirror up, to take our own actions and virtues and look back at them through the mirror . Because we are human: because you are in the same space as the actor you are breathing the same air as them, intense human intimate art form. Theatre conventions: common language or syntax, assumed practices, accepted through repetition, every space has conventions, varies by medium (film, virtual space)
