Using communication to develop intimacy: good, positive communication is: Important in every stage of a close relationship. Complex process, certain principles can help improve interactions with. Relationship or command messages- what an individual conveys about the relationship at hand: more subtle than report, conveyed nonverbally. Tone of voice, volume, pitch, speed of speech, and rhythm of speech: written communication. Includes facial expressions, eye contact, gestures and other body movements, spatial behavior, etc: hard to interpret. Mixed messages: discrepancy between verbal and nonverbal components: where there is discrepancy, we tend to rely on nonverbal communication. Double bind: information from verbal and nonverbal messages that cuases conflict about the relationship between the speaker and the receiver: occurs more if relationship component is unclear, potential depends on quality and mood of relationship.
