What is marriage? addition to the nuclear unit: usually through opposing sexes, but recently same-sex marriage was legalized, bride and groom are usually alive. Endogamy: individuals must marry within their group. Exogamy: specify that people must marry outside their group. Incest taboo: prohibits sex and marriage among designated relatives: descent, inheritance, authority. System of descent: the way people trace kinship over generations. Bilineal system: think of ourselves as related to both our mother"s and our father"s side of the family. Patrilineal system: tracing descent only on the father"s side. Matrilineal system: tracing descent only on the mother"s side.
