Plantations had to be cared for, stability: least common among nomads, usual causes, debt, crime (instead of killing people, would become slave for the families lose, war, usual causes are achieved status ascribed would be born into slavery. In some places, slavery was temporary: freedom purchased, in america, owners would make promises about earning enough money for freedom but could take them back, slavery not always permanent inheritable, children adopted by rich families, slaves weren"t necessarily powerless & poor, some owned property, rare cases: wealthy and or slave owning slaves. Caste: birth determines lifelong status, practice endogamy, marriage within own group, ritual pollution rules, ascribed status (born into it, cant work your way out, limit contact between castes, cant even touch the shadow of an untouchable .
