SOCL 2001 Lecture : Lecture 5
Document Summary
Lecture 5: four methods of data collection, 1. Survey: most common (60% of data collection), but hard to establish causal relationship. People also lie: social desirability, sample- the people that we ask the questions to for research. Population- the entire group, cases, or people the researcher is interested in studying: sat, dewey defeat truman- the chicago tribune printed the wrong message b/c they went off of the poll/survey taken before the actual election was won. They printed dewey defeats truman , but truman actually ends up winning: 2. Experiment: attribution theory- people can explain what happened or how they felt after the experiment, manipulation of independent variable -> clear causal direction, knowledge comes before response. It is not dependent: hawthorne effect and need for control groups (c. f. placebo)- 1920 western electric factory; people are trying to improve the effectiveness of productivity. They painted walls to better colors, gave more breaks, etc. and productivity went up.
