Social groups and form al organizations (chapter 5) Inner circle and iron law of oligarchy: key members ( inner circle) of organizations often grow distant from regular members, appoint other inner circle members to lead, oligarchy- organization dominated by small, self-perpetuating elite. Iron law of oligarchy example- u. s. federal government. In groups- loyalty: out groups- antagonism, them and us division- leads to discrimination, hatred and sometimes murder. In groups- more likely to excuse faults and encourage others to do better. Includes groups you belong to and ones you don"t: used to evaluate ourselves, tremendous influence on us upset when your behaviors/aspirations oppose group standards, contradictions lead to inner turmoil due to social diversity and social mobility. Social networks: people linked to one another, from family and friends to acquaintances and friends of friends, clique-clusters within a group one regularly associates with, obesity is an example.
