Race and Ethnicity
European Americans:
• Diversity
o 58% of the U.S. has a European background
o Germany, Ireland, England and Italy
• Constraints
o WASPS looked down on later immigrants
o Hostile towards to Irish Immigrants
o Experienced prejudice and discrimination
• Strengths
o In response to hostility they developed churches and schools
o Began to prosper
o Fair better than most other groups
Latinos
• Diversity
o 1% of the atio’s populatio
o Is a growing group due to births in the US
o Some ancestors are settlers predating whites
o Some are immigrants or have immigrant families
• Constraints
o Household income lower than the national median
o 25% of Mexican Americans, Dominicans, and Puerto Ricans live below poverty
line
o Have among the lowest education levels
• Strengths
o Household income higher than American Indians and African Americans
o Own 12% of all businesses
o Earn better hourly wage than in the past
African Americans

o Make up 13% of the population
o Only group brought here and enslaved
o Includes native born and immigrants
• Constraints
o Lowest median family income
o Make up 26% of those in poverty
o Have lower educational levels than whites and Asains

Model minority myth video: talks about stereotypes of asians: bad drivers, higher education, better at math, etc, tells that there are different subgroups of asian cultures and tell the difference between poverty and education between subgroups.
