John is more theological, the rest are synoptic, or more similar. Matthew has a jewish audience and luke has a gentile audience. Matthew 70"s (more mythic, jewish audience, confirming prophesy) Luke 70"s-80"s (more mythic, gentile audience, universal appeal, lower classes and underprivileged) 4 gospels "no more, no less," 4 corners of world, 4 winds. Israel: not physical descent but children of god"s promise. Jewish error: relied on good deeds, not faith. What counts is not what humans do, but what god chooses. Saved by grace, through faith, not by merit. Faith, hope, and love/ agape-unconditional love/ new being. Moral righteousness: humility, charity, civil law, purity, chastity, restraint.
