Forming a sense of self preschoolers begin 2 c themselves as distinct indiv persons begin 2 make decisions on their own assert themselves. Ex they decide what want 2 wear/what 2 eat. They grow to better understand their behaviors and the influence it has on others. Preschool yrs largely encompass what erikson called initiative vs. guilt stage (ages 3-6) independence of action vs. guilt conflict is b/t: 1) independence of action (doing things indep of parents) 2) guilt (from failure/not succeeding or from parents shaming) If fail, parents need to soothe and encourage them to try again. If they fail & parents encourage them it gives them more initiative to try again. We know they have a sense of self and a sense of failure bc they cry if they fail @ something.
