Document Summary
Part iii chapters 8, 9, & 10 early childhood. From age 2-6 the preschool years use to be b/c that"s when kids started 1st grade. Advances in the body and brain and the need for adult protection are what children at this age need. Body & brain develop according to powerful epigenetic forces. Biologically driven and socially guided, experience-expectant & experience-dependent. Bodies & brains mature in size & function. Children slim down as the lower body lengthens and fat turns into muscle. Your bmi is actually lower at ages 5&6 than at any other time of life. Center of gravity moves to the belly enabling them to do cartwheels, somersaults, and many other motor skills. Increases in weight & height come about as well. Over each year of early childhood, well-nourished children gain about 4 pounds and grow about 3 inches. Height differences are greater within ethnic groups than between groups, evidence that ethnicity is not determined by genes.
