A single sperm cell (male) penetrates the outer coating of the egg (female) & fuses to form one fertilized cell. A zygote is a fertilized egg with 100 cells that become increasingly diverse. At about 14 days the zygote turns into an embryo (a & b). At 9 weeks, an embryo turns into a fetus (c & d). A baby is used to its mother"s voice & prefers it"s mothers voice to another woman"s or father"s. Fetal alcohol syndrome (fas) high use of alcohol during pregnancy: microcephaly- small head, smooth wide philtrum- upper lip, thin upper lip, small eye openings, upturned nose/flat bridge, low ear placement, low birth weight. Teratogens a chemical or virus that can enter the placenta & harm the developing fetus. Accutane causes birth defects; not many pregnancies survive to birth.
