Intrinsic motivation- a person performs an action because the act is fun, challenging , or satisfying in an internal manner. Instinct theory: drive-reduction theory, need theory, arousal theory, hierarchy of needs. Instincts: the biologically determined and innate patterns of behavior that exist is both people and animals. In animals, migrating, nest building, mating: mcdougal. Instinct approach: approach to motivation that assumes people are governed by instincts similar to those of animals. Pros and cons to instinct approaches: describes human behavior, but does explain why such behaviors exist. Forced psychologists (behaviorists) to acknowledge the importance of hereditary factors. Increased hunger --> eat --> raised glucose --> diminished hunger --> don"t eat ---> lowered glucose. Insulin and glucagon: hormones secreted by the pancreas to control levels of fats, proteins and carbohydrates in the bloodstream. Insulin reduces the level of glucose in the bloodstream: glucagon increases the level of glucose in the bloodstream.
