Document Summary

Glucose is utilized in presence of o2 to eventually produce lots of atp. Glucose picked up in sugars in small intestines to blood stream. Six carbons in glucose - stored energy in bonds. Glucose - c6h12o6 + o2 6co2 + h2o + energy. High energy substrates producing low energy products - exergonic reactions. Energy released is used in an endergonic reaction - coupled reactions. Mitochondria has two membranes- outer and inner. Glucose broken down into two 3-carbon compounds called pyruvate (process- lysis) If o2 is not present, pyruvates do not go in the mitochondria. Bonds were broken in this process- produces atp (2) Pyruvates go thru two membranes to finally be stripped of one of its carbons. Co2 goes from high concentration to low, bloodstream to lungs - exhale. Compartment bw mitochondrion membranes is water based solution. Infoldings of inner membrane increase surface are - called crista or cristae. Strip away carbons to produce energized electron carriers.
