By bringing something hotter or colder into contact with it : we can do work on the gas to change eint. Can"t just apply a force we only do work if there is a net displacement . This means we do work on a gas if we compress it (change its volume) Heater on the bottom to provide heat energy : if i compress the piston: i do positive work on the gas, and the gas does negative work on me.
