This period is known as the gilded age because on the surface it looked like things were doing well, but it doesn"t mean that the whole society was prosperous. During this period, politics were very different from today: "the politics of dead center" The parties you have 2 parties, but they"re not very different. They both end up being very moderate-very in the middle. The republicans don"t have a hold on the power. No one party really dominates but the parties themselves are both just groups of people that are just a variety of groups who don"t have a lot in common.
