Vietnam forces french to surrender, once they surrender, the peace treaty ends up dividing. Vietnam part 2: johnson and escalation- johnson is looking for an opportunity to say we need to start an airwar in. Vietnam: gulf of tonkin resolution (1964)- an american ship is attacked in gulf of tonkin; Johnson used attack as an excuse to launch airwar (even though we went into their territory); proposes to congress this resolution; gives president authority to use military in vietnam. Search and destroy missions- missions to try to block the ability of the vietcong by trying to disrupt their supply lines. Try to destroy any places they use as aid.
