Document Summary
This was the time between the current constitution and the end of the revolutionary war: state power. The first u. s. government started at the state level. If you gave all the power to the state it took power away from central government and centralized power. The revolution defined the way the american political system worked the next 200 years. The first idea put forward was that there should be no president, senate, etc. The idea is that the state should be the most important source of individual powers. In response to the fear of a standing army they created militias within the states. Internal improvements (roads, lighting in a city, canals, etc. ) Many theories were put forward that if someone holds a certain amount of power (president) they would soon become a tyrant. Thomas jefferson held a belief that government should always be maintained by the virtuous. The enlightenment movement influenced the declaration of independence.
