Trying to find a peaceful way out of things in a way that doesn"t lead to war: tea act (1773) Tea is one of the most important consumer products, defines the colonists. Part of the monopoly of the east india company, sustains protests all over the colonies. It"s not the tea that is the problem, but the threat to tax on the colonists: coercive acts (1774) Designed to control boston, refer to them as the intolerable acts. Stimulates a great deal of opposition: first continental congress. King believes these acts allow them to have incentive: war, lexington and concord. Early april 1775, very small engagements, minutemen: organized colonists that travel on behalf of the british crown and fight in the battles. A stalemate (tie, as good as a win to the colonists) they need to hold the british off.
