Martin luther was a monk who grew skeptical of church practices, especially the selling of indulgences. His 95 theses in 1517, and his subsequent refusal to reconcile with the church, helped launch the protestant reformation. Sources will be drawn from syllabus weeks 1-3. Scientific disciplines that we know today took time to develop: did not originate in universities. About a new way of understanding the world, new way of seeking knowledge in the world. Aristotle: four main elements: earth, air, water, and fire. Earth sinks, fire rises, etc: all phenomena explained in terms of interaction, change of these elements.
