Week 10 notes: christianity and the roman empire. A term christians created to describe roman religion. Only occurred in the provinces of italy. Both political and religious aspects: paganism, imperial cult, foreign gods, changes in late roman religion, new cults, changes in judaism, religio licita, temple, beginnings of christianity, jesus of nazareth, pontius pilate, paul. Romans began becoming attracted to foreign gods. The two main foreign gods were mithras (persian god) and isis (egyptian god) Mithras became popular among soldiers and a cult was started; i was for men only; stressed loyalty and brotherhood; had 7 steps of initiation. The cult of isis also came about; had both male and female followers, but they were generally separated; steps of initiation. Could practice their religion only if they prayed for the emperor and only if they kept their religion to themselves (weren"t allowed to preach and convert) Once the temple of jerusalem is destroyed, jews began building synagogues.
