Many individuals in ancient greece are called to answer for the charges against them. He does not deny charges, he explains why people have gotten mad and don"t understand his actions, continuing his troubling actions. He says death could be 2 things, transformation to another life with great people (heroes, philosophers), or sleep, and he would love a great night"s sleep. He"s not being harmed, he"s old and about to die anyway. They"re losing a known wise man, he"s going to gain only wiser or greater things. He knows human wisdom is not as great as the wisdom of the gods. He has an interesting form of humility. Defense or explanation, what apology means in this context.
