GEOG 2051 Lecture : Geography 2051 Notes
Document Summary
Physical geography: people, culture, things that we have done, cities, industry, roads, politics, natural environment. Five common themes in geographic research: location, place, characteristics and attributes that make a location unique and different. Region: attributes that a location shares with other locations, an area that is internally homogenous in some attribute or characteristic, movement, pathways, interconnections, linkages, things that bind locations together and allow them to interact, ex. Highways, sewer systems, etc (these link people: river systems, migration pathways, sediment transport paths linking one region to the next, human-environment interactions, natural disasters that effect people, people"s effect on the environment, oldest theme in geography. Gis-coverages: geographic information systems, a digital map, a series of files: layers, survey control, soils, land cover, wetlands, floodplains, zoning, parcels, same function of old paper map but this is faster. Projections: attributes (distance, area, shape, proximity), families (cylindrical, conic, planar), distortion, standard line/point.
