What is geography: earth/describe: approaches, systematic, regional, man-environment. Region arbitrary, homogeneous character: regions which conjure up a whole area of criteria. The earth: shape: oblate spheroids, diameter 7927 miles, 27 miles shorter thru poles, 72% water, northern hemisphere land, southern hemisphere water, depths: homestake mine s. d. The crust of the earth"s surface is about 20 miles thick and the core comes after that. Maps and grid systems: problem: two dimensional surface, map properties, direction/azimuth, distance, area/relative to each other, shows the area relative from one place to another, shape. Types of projections: planar/plane, conic, cylindrical, math/others. Mercator projection is the most common map projection. Wednesday 1/23: 1 in=one mile, 1 in=two miles, 1 in=4 miles, page= 128 miles. Boatright"s land: system used for the first 13 states, used latitude and longitude. Contour lines: line on map that connects points of equal elevation, contour interval.
