GEOG 2050 Lecture : Lecture 3
Document Summary
Our sun: 93 million miles through the vacuum of space, bounces off the moon, travels another. 230,000 miles: most of our earths energy comes from the sun, not geothermal energy, our long-term weather is controlled by the sun, takes about 7 days to reach earth, 186 thousand miles per second. Planet earth: satellite of the sun, earth has a satellite of the sun (the moon, earth revolves around the sun. It rotates about an axis: because it is locked within the suns gravitational pull, moon revolves around the earth. Orbit of earth: average distance from the sun: 93 million miles, furthest distance from the sun: 94. 5 miles. July 4- aphelion: closest distance from the sun: 91. 5 million miles. January 3- perihelion: not a perfect circle, it"s an ellipse, has a lot to do with the earth rotating on an axis(why its warmer when the sun is further away)
