GEOG 2050 Lecture : Geog Lecture 5
Document Summary
Wein"s law: the wavelength of the peak radiance decreases linearly as the temperature increases, the warmer the body, shorter wavelength it is giving off, the colder the body, longer wavelength it is giving off. Energy transfers: three means of transfer, conduction: molecule to molecule transfer to heat, convection: energy transfer through physical mixing involving strong vertical motion, advection: physical mixing involving strong horizontal motion. Why is the sky blue but sometimes red: rayleigh scattering, when insolation passes through the atmosphere, after scattering the only color that remains is blue, sunset- sun at lower positions has more atmosphere to pass through. Refraction: bending of light as it travels through a medium. E. g. rainbows: direct and diffuse radiation, shadow = direct, diffuse = scattered, no shadow. Energy pathways: all energy comes from the sun. Albedo: the reflective quality of a surface, dark objects have a low albedo.
