You bad girl! the mother acts that way out of embarrassment. She grabs the girl"s arm and shakes her. Mother feels uncomfortable because she is not in the same social class as the doctor. Reading thru the story is a bit unsettling. The doctor wants to hurt for a split second when she is giving attitude. Tension can build in a scene very quickly. The story of an hour -3rd person - takes place in late 19th century.
