Communication- the imparting, conveying or exchanging of information via spoken or written words, sounds, or visual symbols. Physical context- where you are dictates how you communicate. Chronological context- the time of the communication act. Side stream listeners: individuals to whom the message is not directed, but over hear the message. Encoded: the thoughts and ideas must be translated into verbal. & nonverbal symbols (i. e. words, gestures, pictures, etc. ) Decoding: assigning meaning to the thoughts & ideas expressed by the sender. Can be affected by both subjectivity and learning. Subjectivity: the fact that words can mean diff. things to diff. ppl. Channel: the means of delivery for the message. Verbal channel: consists of words that are spoken. Nonverbal channel: consists of such things as gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, body posture, and movement. Auditory messages: sent & receives via the five senses. Tactile messages: sent & receives via the sense of touch.
