Point of the story isn"t whether or not it actually happened. Story is made up in effort to understand what was going on in the world they occupied. Primitive people thought like children, so when they were scared they made story, we now know them as myths, made by all countries. There is a stage call myth making stage, at the primitive stage before humans can understand their world. thought of as false stories. Around 1200 bc, ancient mediterranean world made rational logical explanations of events. These stories have gone on, but for different reasons: best western parables are the bible parables. Stories that are not true but have a meaning. 4 theories: max mueller- concluded that all ancient myths are about nature. The natural environment is what most primitive people have interactions with. Fascinated that the same kinds of myths turn out in all cultures. The great flood in the bible is in all myths.
