Document Summary

Direct: the cells have to be touching each other. Audio recording started: 3:01 pm tuesday, october 4, 2016. Hormone will have to be bound by a carrier protein in the blood stream to *** hydrophobic ligand. Specificity: each type of receptor only binds one type of ligand/molecule. Affinity: strength of binding between a ligand and its receptor. Receptor specificity- based mainly on shape: messenger 1 is hydrophilic because receptor a is on the outside with the water, messenger 2 is hydrophobic because receptor c is on the inside of the cell. Receptor affinity- reflection of attraction; how strongly attracted to a protein that ligand is. Receptor activation depends on: concentration of ligand, expression level of receptor. More receptors activate more receptors: affinity of receptor for ligand. Receptor turnover or degradation= taking receptors down. The number of receptors on a cell should correlate with how many ligands are around in the cell.
