BIOL 1202 Lecture : Mycology Notes
Document Summary
A single clone of the honey mushroom can cover more than 2,200 acres (1,600 football fields) Diversity of fungi: closely related to animals instead of plants. Usually underground or inside a decaying or living organism. They break down food outside the fungi and then absorb digested food through the mycelium. Mycelia are composed of hyphae (singular: hypha: hyphae are the thread like filaments of a fungus: Surrounds the plasma membrane and cytoplasm: cell walls of a fungi are compose of chitin: Polymer w/ glucose subunits and n-containing functional groups. Chitin also makes up exoskeletons in insects: septa: structure which partially separate the cytoplasm inside the hyphae, found in many fungi. Some fungi have specialized hyphae to trap prey: fungi propagate by spores: Haploid (1n; one cell with one nucleus) cells which can grow directly into a hypha. Has to be a different mating type to reproduce; (+) red haploid or (-) blue haploid.
