Document Summary
Scientific method: theory- something that they have done a lot of experiments on and is believed to be true but is possible to be proven wrong, law- the most rare in the scientific world. Cannot be disproven: hypothesis- an educated guess based off observations. Building blocks of life on earth: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen. What makes a molecule organic: carbon, hydrogen, has to have both. Organic molecules are typically more complex than inorganic. Organic molecules: carbohydrates, composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, polar, can interact with water, monosaccharides, 3-7 carbon backbone, ex/ glucose(most common), fructose and galactose all share the same chemical formula, ribose- oh, deoxyribose- h. Does not have that extra hydroxyl group: disaccharides, sucrose (glucose + fructose, lactose (glucose + galactose, maltose (glucose + glucose, polysaccharides, starch- energy storage in plants and seeds. Moderately branched: glycogen- energy storage in animals. Highly branched: cellulose- cell wall in plants.
