Race is a culturally constructed category, based on perceived physical differences. Implies hereditary differences and is used to justify social stratification. While anthropologists note that race is a cultural construct, it should still be studied: becomes a social fact w/ enormous impact on people"s lives. Some may only note skin color, others note hair texture & facial features. Some have many races, some only recognize a few. Often has much to do w/ things other than race: socioeconomic class, behavior, dress & ideologies developed around them. Places other than louisiana don"t identify creole as a race. Ex: irish and italians used to be considered non-white. Genotype: all of the genes a person carries. Phenotype: how your genes are expressed. Genes you receive from your parents set the parameters. Modern racial paradigms inextricably linked traits (not actually linked) Black is not necessarily athletic: prejudice, not scientifically proven.
