Toddlerhood is the period between ages 1 and 3 years. They are movers and shakers at this age; crawling and walking and exploring their world. They match objects and actions in their world to the language that describes them. ****occur around 12 months of age and mark the transition from preverbal to verbal communication: first words, they are symbolic and arbitrary, for each word learned, a lexical entry is made. Contains: a series of symbols (actual graphic entry, the sound of the word, the meaning of the word, its part of speech. Gesture use precedes spoken language as children transition from the prelinguistic stage to the one word stage of language development. They use gesture/word combos as they move from the one- word to the two-word stage. (ex. pointing to the chair and saying mommy as she"s transistioning to the two-word stage of saying mommy, chair )
