PSYC 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Egocentrism, Prefrontal Cortex, Information Processing
Document Summary
Being overweight has become a serious health problem in early childhood. Young children should engage in physical activity every day. Strongly influenced by caregivers behavior: 2 hours of physical activity every day is recommended for children. Children represent their world with words, images, and drawings: begin to form staple concepts, begin to reason, do not yet perform operations (preoperational) Substances of preoperational thought: symbolic function substage gains ability to mentally represent objects that is not present. Intuitive thought substage: uses primitive reasoning, wants to know answers to questions. Limitations: centration: center on one aspect of a thing, ignoring all the others, conservation: understanding you can change the shape but not the basic properties. Girls are slightly smaller and lighter than boys. Girls have more fatty tissues, boys have more muscle tissues. Brain continues to grow during early childhood- one of the most important developments. From 3-6 years old: most rapid growth in the brain in the prefrontal cortex, myelination.
