Document Summary

Foundations chapter 38: fluid, electrolytes, and acid-base balances. A passive process by which molecules of a solute move through a cell membrane from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. Rate of diffusion depends on: the size of the molecule, the concentration of the solution, the temperature of the solution. Occurs when molecules move across cell membranes against a concentration gradient. Molecules move from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration. Involves the movement of water across a membrane from an area of a less concentrated solution to an area of more concentrated solution. Osmolality: the concentration of solutes creating pressure in body fluid. An isoltonic solution is the same osmoality as blood. A hypotonic solution is of lower osmolality than blood. A hypertonic solution contains a higher concentration of solutes than does blood. Involves a deficit or excess in fluid volume or an alteration in distribution among the fluid compartments.
