PSYC 256 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Lesion, Action Potential, Positron Emission Tomography
BRAIN AND BEHAVIOR
Anatomical Terminology
• Dorsal: top/superior
• Ventral: bottom/inferior
• Rostral: front/anterior
• Caudal: back/posterior
• Medial: middle
• Lateral: away from the middle or also side of the body
• Proximal: closer
• Distal: farther away
• Cortex: outer brain/wrinkly thing
• Brain Lobes: frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital
• Left hemisphere: gyri & sulci
Cerebral Cortex Principles
• Hemispheric specialization
o Each lobe has specialized functions
• Localization of function
o Specific mental processes are correlated with discrete regions of the brain
Corpus Callosum
• A bundle of axons that connects the left and right hemispheres
o Left: language dominant
o Right: visuospatial dominant
Split Brain Studies
• Sperry (1960-1998)
o First to study patients with a split corpus callosum for epilepsy treatment
o Conclusion: two hemispheres function independently
• Gazzaniga (1980s-current)
o Conclusion: two hemispheres are complementarity
Conclusions
• Left hemisphere
o Rhythm
o Temporal order
o Language
• Right hemisphere
o Melody
o Spatial orientation
o Face and pattern recognition
