Prior to exploration, the center of africa was trade. They found route around africa, the oceanic trade route. Drive to explore and the carnival was a new ship that was easier to sail to put cannons on boats. They wanted to trade with newcomers, so they would ask them if they could trade with them and if they disagreed, there was conflict. Portuguese did not establish an empire in africa to change the cultures in africa because they just wanted to trade with people, make trading posts. Luxury goods: mainly sugar, and pepper, first experience of sugar plantations. The king was distinguished by the coral shells because it represented his ctrl of the land nd the sea. Leopard- symbolizes his power or ctrl over the land. The people of benin revered their pain so much. Interconnected with indian ocean trade with east africa - muslims and arabs.
