Document Summary
Chapter 1: introduction to operations and supply chain management. 1. 1 why study operations and supply chain management: every organization must make a product or provide a service that someone values. It would not make sense for an organization to exist otherwise. The common thread is that each organization has an operations function. The operations function is the collection of people, technology, and systems within an organization that has a primary responsibility for providing the organization"s products or services: most organizations function as a part of larger supply chains. A supply chain is a network of manufacturers and service providers that work together to create products or services needed by end users. They are linked together through physical flows, information flows, and monetary flows. The focus can either be on providing physical goods or providing an intangible service. The supply chain activities will thus differ simultaneously.
