Document Summary

Part 1 - concept of a limbic brain. Catani - a revised limbic system model for memory, emotion and behaviour. Its always been considered as a complex structure/arrangement of transitional structures situated between a visceral primitive" brain and a more evolved brain. The neurons and fibres which make the limbic structures are in a simple arrangement and aren"t different to the other subcortical nuclei of the brainstem. The subcortical limbic structures: amygdala, mammillary bodies, hypothalamus, thalamic nuclei (anterior, intralaminar and medial dorsal groups, ventral striatum (nucleus accumbens) Corticoid areas of the amygdaloid complex, substantia innominate, septal and olfactory nuclei which show an anatomical organisation that lacks lamination and dendritic orientation. Next level the allocortex of the olfactory regions and hippocampal complex, where the neurons are differentiated into layers and their dendrites show an orderly pattern of orientation. The allcortex and the corticoid region is grouped into the limbic zone of the cerebral cortex and is distinct from the paralimbic zone.
