Chapter 3- basic concepts of law: private and public law. Private law- part of the law in which the government as such does not play the role. It deals with the mutual relations between the citizens. Major branches: contract law (regulates sales, ownership and mortgages, tort law (deals with compensation for damage that occurs when there is no contract, property law (regulates sales, ownership and mortgages) Other branches: family law (deals with marriages, adoption, right to name, law of commerce (transport of goods) Special branch: private international law (which laws are applicable if a case falls under more than one jurisdiction) Public law- part of the law in which the government as such plays a role. European union law- includes treaties between the member states of the eu in which the main institutions are regulates. These rules do resemble the constitutional law of the individual member states- kind of public law.
