Clinical psychology aims to reduce psychological distress and to enhance and promote psychological well-being by the systematic application of knowledge derived from psychological theory and data. bps, 2010 (p. 2) Key skills: assessment, formulation- how events in their life have led up to a diagnosis, how the problem was created and what maintained it. Intervention- always based on formulation: evaluation, communication, reflection- what i don"t know, what went well and what didn"t and use this to improve and learn, research- what is and isn"t working in services. The branch of medicine dealing with the causes and processes of mental disorders: abnormal, maladaptive behaviour or mental activity. Can be useful to study the difference between normal and abnormal . Concepts of abnormality : psychometric abnormality (cohen, 1981): a deviation from a statistically determined norm. Incomprehensible behaviour (ahn et al, 2003) is considered abnormal as abnormality is judged by how understandable a behaviour is. Behaviour displayed is not understood therefore it is abnormal.
