Document Summary

Task 1: culture and point of view summary. East asian and westerners thinking is fundamentally different. East asians attend to broad perspective (complex social networks requires this perspective taking); westerners are more independent (less complex social networks) and attend to focal object, analyzing its attributes + categorize. Assumption that basic processes of cognition and perception are universal are challenged by historians and philosophers of science. Ancient chinese and greek conceptions of world and processes to understand them were different from each other. Greek thought was analytic focus on salient object assessing and categorizing this object to find rules (logical rules) Ancient chinese thought was holistic focus on field in which salient object is located relationships + events were assessed rather than specific properties of objects. Reasons have to do with differing social practices of two societies. Chinese were socially interdependent complex social networks: trying to cooperate actions with large group of others.
